‘Truly disappointing findings’: Is labelling the symptom of pork problem?
A supermarket audit has found imported pork sold under New Zealand branding, with some bacon products listing as many as 14 possible countries of origin.
Animal Policy International co-executive director Rainer Kravets says the labelling leaves shoppers unable to tell where their pork comes from.
“The findings were truly disappointing,” he says.
“Products had a New Zealand flag on the front of the packaging and said product of New Zealand, but at the same time on the back stated that the meat may be coming from New Zealand or the EU.”
He says 85% of cured pork is imported, mostly from countries that still allow sow stalls.
He is calling for one standard for all products sold in New Zealand.
“The issue of the labelling is the evidence of the problem, not the problem itself.”
