Australian pork producers want compulsory country-of-origin labelling after a national fast-food chain was found to be using imported Danish pork.

CountryWide CONNECT’s Australian rural commentator Libby Price says Mexican chain Guzman y Gomez, which has 230 outlets, imports frozen Danish pork and processes it in Australia.

She says the green and gold kangaroo label shows a set amount of a product has been processed in Australia.

“Even though it’s 100% Danish pork, they can use that label,” she says.

Price says compulsory origin labels have applied to seafood since July, and pork producers want the same rule.

“I do think the labeling point is fair enough.”
