Government have refused to change the law that lets imported pork be packaged as a New Zealand product. New Zealand Pork chief executive Brent Kleiss says the opposition comes despite recommendations from the Regulations Review Committee and the Ministry of Regulation to look at the labelling.

He says about 85% of imported pork goes into processed ham and bacon products.

“The first one he said was that the scale of the issue’s just not there. I find that pretty bewildering,” he says.

“This is about the Consumer’s Right to Know Act, and the consumer’s right to know is based on being fully informed about what it is they’re purchasing and what it is they’re supporting when they’re buying a product.”
