Brent Kleiss, chief executive of New Zealand Pork, says the Resource Management Act is now the industry’s number one priority. He says pig farmers want imported pork held to the same welfare and environmental standards they meet.

“We’ve been campaigning for the longest time for equal standards for imports,” he says.

“The best farmers are capturing all of their emissions from their effluent.”

He says the gas is captured in covered ponds and put back into the system for power generation.

He says labelling misleads shoppers, with packs visibly marked as made in New Zealand, while the pork was produced in up to 13 countries and written only in small print.
