New Zealand red meat exports hit a record $1.37 billion in June, up 50% on the same month last year, Meat Industry Association chief executive Nick Beeby says.

Sheepmeat led the rise, up 53%, with New Zealand now exporting red meat to more than 100 countries.

“It is another fantastic result for the red meat sector,” Beeby says.

Tight global protein supply and a diversified trade strategy are behind the result, he says.

“New Zealand has always had a very ambitious trade strategy.”

He says the momentum needs to be protected as cost-of-living pressure pushes some consumers towards cheaper cuts.

“We’ve got to be able to celebrate the wins that we’re having at the moment, but we’ve also got to be really focused.”
