Financial skills the next hurdle on the dairy progression path
New research into the dairy farming pathway shows financial literacy, not technical skill, is the main obstacle to progression.
Luke Doyle’s Kellogg Rural Leadership project found 86% of young farmers identify financial risk as a barrier to progression.
“We have the best dairy farmers technically in the world and it’s just making sure that the financial literacy is being taught alongside the farming side of things,” he says.
He wants a clearer template for the shift from employee to employer, and more mentorship for those entering their first contract.
