A cold front and low stalling over the South Island will bring snow to parts of the high country within the next couple of days. Blue Skies Weather forecaster Tony Trewinnard says the Mackenzie Basin, Twizel and Lake Tekapo Village in line for substantial falls and up to a metre on some ski fields.

“It’s quite a narrow band where the really heavy snow is going to fall,” he says.

Canterbury is running about 2.9C above normal for late August.

A westerly pattern dominates the next six weeks, keeping the West Coast wet and the North Island dry, with Bay of Plenty the driest.

Southland will swing between warm and cold days, with strong winds near Foveaux Strait.

“It’s going to be a tough season for Southland farmers.”
