A building El Niño comparable in scale to 1877 is on the way, and most of the country faces a dry spring, Blue Skies Weather forecaster Tony Trewinnard says.

“The more frost you get, the more that gets delayed,” he says.

“It starts to become a management thing now.”

The east is drying out while the West Coast and Southland stay wet.

“10 of the 13 regions around New Zealand will be substantially dry by the end of September.

“A relatively low-cost preparation now could save you substantial cost in six, eight, 12 months’ time.”
