The genetic engineering controversy is a false one manufactured by the organic industry, says Dr Steven Novella, host of The Skeptics’ Guide to the Universe.

“This is just as much a misinformation campaign as the fossil fuel industry trying to deny climate change,” he says.

“This is an industry basically badmouthing its competitors, that’s all it is.”

Genetic engineering introduces no unique risk to health or the environment, he says.

“Organic farming is partly sustainable, but it’s mostly an appeal to the nature fallacy.”
