'The complete package': Record-breaking bull sells for $220,000
A record-breaking $220,000 was the price tag on Lot 3 sold at Kaharau Angus’s bull sale, beating out the $168,000 set days earlier by Taimate Angus. Penny Hoogerbrug, studmaster at Kaharau Angus, says she is still in disbelief.
“I guess we’ve been in shock a little bit, overwhelmed, humbled, grateful, a whole range of emotions,” she says.
They picked ‘Kaharau MacPherson’ out as a yearling, and he went into the top mob straight away.
“He exudes exceptional depth and softness, plenty of muscle, outstanding structural correctness, and has the performance data to match.”
Ardrossan Angus took a share in MacPherson while visiting the sales, alongside buyers Rolling Rock Angus in the Waikato and Earnscleugh Angus in Southland.
“It’s pretty neat for us that in a few short years, there’s going to be Kaharau MacPherson progeny on the ground in Australia.”
The result, she says, belongs to the whole team at Kaharau Station.
“We’ve got Nick Carr on the farm, who helps us run the operation day-to-day, and his contribution has been enormous.”
The stud was started by Hoogerbrug’s father.
“We’re very, very fortunate to be the guardians of it, and of the stud at this time.”
Hoogerbrug keeps the breeding straightforward.
“Possibly the success has come from the fact that we’ve stuck to our guns.”
She says everything is bred with the commercial client in mind.
“These bulls do have to get around pretty steep hill country here on the East Coast.”
