Regenerative has no shared global definition and remains a flashpoint word, says Dave Maslen, General Manager of Strategy and Commercial Partnerships at DairyNZ.

In his previous role at New Zealand Merino, he says  the key was the relationship with the customer.

“What do they understand you to mean when you’re talking about these things?” he says.

“The regen label was more about being able to really clearly demonstrate that we were leaving the place better than it was when we found it.”

He says accreditation has its uses but can be narrow.

“What an accreditation scheme does is it tells you what you’re allowed to do and what you’re not allowed to do.”
