Cyclone Gabrielle pushed Matangi Station to bring its meat processing in-house, a move Ballance Farm Environment Awards East Coast Regional Supreme winners Jamie and Nicky Gaddum say became a major turning point for their business.

“We couldn’t get a power supply to the butcher for a week, so we lost a lot of meat there, and it basically forced a rethink of the business,” Nicky says.

She says the move has led to huge growth.

The couple produce beef and lamb for eating quality, supplying chefs and top restaurants. Jamie says winning the award has lifted the brand.

“It’s put us in situations where you have opportunities to tell your story.”
