Rural commentator and journalist Tony Leggett says Silver Fern Farms’ plan to invest $100 million at its Finegand plant near Balclutha is a vote of confidence in the sector’s future.
“Farmers in that southern North Island should be pretty happy to see it,” he says.
He says both Silver Fern Farms and Alliance Group have come out of a massive loss period, with new ownership through Dawn Meats.
He is unconvinced that the slide in Alliance’s share value tells the real story.
“It’s not a great proxy for farmer confidence in their co-operatives.”
