Southland Mayor Rob Scott says it is early days for a proposed $3 billion lignite-to-fertiliser plant near the region.

“I’m kind of doing my own research,” he says.

“Southland’s the place to be at the moment, with all this investment and hype going on.”

He says the project would go down the fast-track process, “which isn’t necessarily as fast as it sounds”.

“Diversifying the economy is always big for us down here as well.

“We don’t want to have all of our eggs in that one basket.”
