Wild deer in the Hawke’s Bay are costing farmers about $10,000 a year off gross margin, with many properties carrying far more deer than owners realise, says primary sector economist Peter MacIntyre.

His Hawke’s Bay based research found one farmer who thought he had 50 deer flew a drone over and counted 300.

“People are underestimating how many deer they’ve got by about five to six times,” he says.

An average deer eats about a tonne of dry matter a year.
