Pāmu farms are culling surplus stock and selling store animals early, while holding extra body condition and supplement heading into El Niño.
Pāmu Upper South Island general manager Cam Walker says each farm has feed-budget trigger points in place.
“Let’s protect that capital stock,” he says.
Walker says the lower South Island and West Coast have had a wet, cooler spring, while northern farms have good growth.
He says surplus feed and stock move between Pāmu farms before the company looks externally.
Walker says now is the time for water infrastructure jobs, such as stock and house water supply, before conditions tighten.
“It’s not about panicking, it’s just about being prepared and well-planned.”
