NZ Shorthorn Hosts Breeders & Farmers at Raupuha Stud
The first draft of 18-month-old steers set to be processed as part of a six-year breeding programme in collaboration with Beef + Lamb Genetics NZ (BLGNZ) will be on show. Words NZ Shorthorn.

NZ Beef Shorthorn is excited to be welcoming breeders and commercial farmers to Raupuha Stud, Mahoenui, on 29 April as part of their three-day Herd Tour and AGM. The herd tour will showcase top-quality Shorthorn cattle from breeders across Waikato, King Country, and the Bay of Plenty.
A highlight will be seeing the first draft of 18-month-old steers set to be processed as part of a six-year breeding programme in collaboration with B+LNZ Genetics. These steers – sired by Shorthorn, Angus, or Hereford bulls – are linked to the BLGNZ INZB Progeny Test Farms, exploring crossbreeding advantages.
The first 90 steers will be processed in early May through Silver Fern Farms’ EQ programme. All male and female progeny have undergone DNA testing, regular weight monitoring, and muscle scanning. Also on display will be the recently weaned 2024-born steers, which will undergo additional faecal and Carla recording, supported by the BLGNZ INZB programme.
The day will feature guest speakers, including representatives from Silver Fern Farms discussing the value of premium beef and the EQ programme, Sarah Adams from Gallagher presenting on eShepherd (virtual fencing), and BLGNZ experts introducing the new nProve platform for beef – an initiative NZ Shorthorn has played a key role in developing.
The herd tour will stop at several breeders across the Waikato and Bay of Plenty, offering valuable insights for breeders looking to improve their herds with top-performing genetics.
