North Island tractor sales fell 30.6% last month while the South Island climbed 40.2%. Tractor and Machinery Association president Jaiden Drought says the swings come off tiny volumes.

“The only region in the North Island that was actually up is the Manawatu, but only by three tractors,” he says.

He says buyers are waiting on the election, and demand is strongest for tractors of 150 horsepower and above. He says prices have climbed sharply.

“$2,000 a horsepower now is certainly not out of the realm of possibility — it’s definitely not $1,000 a horsepower anymore.”
