Panels that let light through to pasture when needed could make dual-use sheep farming more viable. Dr Sam Wilson, the Trevor Ellett Lecturer in Grassland Science at Massey University says plants do not need all available sunlight, and some shading does little harm.

“There are technologies with panels that will let the light through at certain times when you need it,” he says.

Sheep use the panels for shelter.
