Minister says aquaculture needs a bespoke statute to reach scale
Minister for Oceans and Fisheries Hon Shane Jones says aquaculture needs its own statute to reach the scale the sector is targeting. He says New Zealand has the fourth-largest sovereign oceanic zone and is consistently hitting limits on how many more cows it can milk.
“To create this hitherto unknown, unseen scale of industry, we need a bespoke statute that encourages money, represents a one-stop shop,” he says.
He says the investment needed runs to many billions of dollars over 15 to 20 years. He says he genuinely believes Labour sees the value and will want to support it because of its job-rich outcomes.
