Documents obtained by 1News show a shallow bore at Lagmhor School recorded nitrate levels above the drinking water limit. The bore returned 11.5mg/L of nitrogen, just above the 11.3 limit.
Environment Canterbury and Mid-Canterbury councillor Ian Mackenzie says the cause is past land use rather than dairy intensification.
“The majority of those nitrates are coming from nitrogen fertiliser from the cropping farms that used to sit over that Tinwald plume,” he says.
