The spring weather pattern has already set in about a week or more ahead of the calendar. Blue Skies Weather forecaster Tony Trewinnard says a westerly-focused pattern is driving heavy rain onto the West Coast and cold outbreaks into the south, while the North Island stays drier.

“Today might be the first day of spring in terms of our calendar, but I don’t think it’s been the first day of spring in terms of our weather patterns,” Trewinnard says.

The North Island has missed the recent rain the South Island has had, he says.

“It is definitely on that drying out trend,” says Trewinnard.
