The European Union’s shift towards treating agricultural methane differently from carbon dioxide is a win for New Zealand farmers, Groundswell founder Bryce McKenzie says.

“The split gas approach is an answer to some of the stuff that we’ve had thrown at agriculture in the past, and we all know that methane is a short-lived gas,” he says.

He says the change is long overdue.

“I take my hat off to Beef and Lamb New Zealand for the work they’ve done on this – it’s certainly a far better place than we were going to be some years ago.”

Groundswell prefers GWP Star to GWP100, McKenzie says.

“We always thought the GWP Star was a far better measurement.”
