Federated Farmers is calling ACT’s proposal to hand control of game animals on conservation land to hunters ludicrous. West Coast president Simon Cameron sees three affected parties: conservationists wanting zero densities, hunters wanting higher numbers and farmers dealing with the impact on productive land.
He says the levers should not be in hunters’ hands.
“Saying that you’re going to limit WARO (wild animal recovery operations) operators from shooting male animals is ludicrous,” he says.
He wants an MPI-led national strategy implemented through the regions, with farmers, hunters and conservationists all having a seat at the table.
