Farm vehicles must be fit for purpose under new codes of practice

A Safer Farms champion says two new approved codes of practice should push farmers to build safety into every job.
Roger Barton, Safer Farms Regional Champion, says the codes, covering roles and responsibilities and safe farm vehicle operation, give farmers more latitude.
“The most important thing to do in on farm safety isn’t actually ticking the box,” he says.
He says the farm owner still controls the workplace and must supply vehicles that are fit for purpose.
“I think there is a much better ethic now around employees and employers talking around the issues.”
Barton runs a crush protection device on his own quad bike and says the evidence shows they make a difference.
“You have got to get home safe, and you’re protecting the value of the rider.”
