The latest Zespri licence auctions have delivered record prices for red and gold kiwifruit varieties, with the new R80 red pool reaching $457,000 a hectare, says Bailey’s horticulture specialist Snow Williams.

“The R80 was the one that really took us by surprise, the new red variety,” he says.

“That was staggering and shows a lot of confidence in the red varietals.”

He says the industry is in good heart, driven by Zespri’s marketing strength, and the R80 looks set to fill a gap and extend the season.

He says good kiwifruit blocks now sell for between $200,000 and $300,000 a hectare, and suitable land is hard to find.
