Five years of development has already gone into Rurtec’s cordfree shearing handpiece. Ian Carr, the Hamilton company’s managing director, says the models already on the market are chunky and difficult to handle, removing some of the benefits of not needing to be connected to a power supply.

“But it’s easy to wrap your hand around this one and it’s more powerful with an 18 volt battery,” he says.

This means a shearer can take the wool off 10 big ewes in just one battery charge.

The handpiece was a finalist in the prototype section of the Innovation Awards and there was plenty of interest shown from sheep farmers as well as shearers. Due to sourcing issues caused by Covid for both the motors and batteries, which are manufactured in China, none were available for sale at Fieldays. But he was taking the names of visitors who were interested, to let them know when it was on the market. Some who hoped they would strike it lucky were entering in a prize draw at his stand.

It’s anticipated the price will be $895 for the handpiece, two batteries and a charger.
