New Zealand Avocado chief executive Brad Siebert says avocado exports to Australia will jump to more than 2.8 million trays this season, up from 750,000 a year earlier, as the industry forecasts an 8 million tray crop.

“The ingredients are all there for a good season ahead,” he says.

The lift is put down to productivity and fine weather, with Western Australia’s lighter supply opening a window on the eastern seaboard.

Asian markets keep growing alongside that volume, and the India free trade deal is phasing out its 30% tariff. New Zealand has held access to India since 2014.

“Consumers are looking for some really safe, trusted supply of fresh produce.”

He credits growers for the result.

“The thanks should be going to the avocado growers who are actually growing these things.”
