Angus breeders are cautious about a move to a national multi-breed genetic evaluation.

Angus Australia chief executive Scott Wright says 873 members answered a survey on the proposal, which would run tropical and temperate evaluations across breeds. Angus makes up about 52% of the Australian beef population, so the breed has a lot riding on the outcome.

The breed’s own Angus-only evaluation launched in January.

“We’re running it parallel to the existing evaluation, so members can have a look and a feel how that works,” he says.

Seven new traits and an index are due later this year, giving members more to compare as the two evaluations run side by side.
