The Waikato Pasture Summit drew more than 230 people to a farm in the back blocks of Putāruru, Pasture Summit chairperson and director Robbie Ferris says.

“Really well attended,” Ferris says of the North Island event, which matched the 230 who turned out for the South Island equivalent.

The day centred on host farmers Hugh and Anna putting their full financials on display.

“Opening your undie drawer is essentially how it was described on the day, everyone can go in and have a look.”

He says the industry stands alone in that openness.

“We would be one of the few, if not the only industry in New Zealand that does that.”

Farmers are optimistic but realistic on payout, Ferris says.

“A few years ago we were looking at profitable farms, the challenge now is to be the most profitable farm.”

Pasture Summit runs two events in each island a year, with plans to reach Manawatū and Northland.
