Wool prices hold as $9.5 million changes hands at auction
PGG Wrightson National Wool auction manager Dave Burridge says prices held steady at the latest Christchurch sale, with $9.5 million of mostly fine wool changing hands.
About 9% of wool offered was passed in nationally.
He says strong wool sits at 630c/kg clean, about $5 greasy, while 18-micron merino is above $30 clean and 28-micron wool is about $10.
Burridge says the North Island and Southland clips arriving from December will test the market, but wool is moving to exporters.
“It’s not getting stockpiled, which is another really positive indicator.”
He says more growers are discussing ram selection and breeding to lift wool returns.
“There’s definitely a different air in wool circles now.”
