Hawke’s Bay vegetable growers withdrew their bid to buy the McCain factory in Hastings after the company made the plant’s equipment unavailable, says Central Hawke’s Bay Mayor Will Foley.

“The growers liked the condition of the plant,” he says.

“It’s pretty disappointing to get to this stage and then for McCain’s to say that that’s not available.”

A feasibility study into a smaller processing site continues, with early results promising, he says.

“We’re still doing plenty of work.

“We’re not giving up on this yet.”
