Tony Trewinnard of Blue Skies Weather says it will be colder than normal for the next two weeks, on a southerly airflow.

“These types of frosts, chilly mornings and cool days are exactly what you’d expect at this time of year,” he says.

Brief southerly changes on Friday and next week could bring snow to low levels in the eastern South Island, though neither looks to be a major event.

The middle week of August is unusually hard to call.

“Half of the data is saying settled fine, sunny, and the other half is saying cloudy, rainy, northerly.”

From mid-August, the pattern turns mild and dry as El Niño winds up.

“The last thing you want to start spring with is a soil moisture deficit.”
