The New Zealand Veterinary Association will renew its push to ban public firework sales after the government rejected the change despite a petition of more than 93,000 signatures, says president Dr Rob Mills.

“The debate is definitely not ended,” he says.

“We just hope that some sanity in the next government comes through, that sanity will prevail.”

He saw one horse that had spooked through several fences and had to be euthanised.

“Its legs were just stripped to the bone, and in the end, it was just too much.”
