West Coast spray contractors are two to three weeks ahead of last year after a good run of weather.
Harry Soper, PGG Wrightson retail sales manager for rural supplies in Canterbury and the West Coast, says tight planting windows make product choice the challenge for pasture renewal.
“Some of the various pasture bugs and species and insects that we have to deal with – there’s more and more new products out now that are very tolerant to some of these things,” he says.
Soper says maize is now a growing market on the Coast, helped by generations of breeding.
“The West Coast is and will always be pretty important to us.”
