Teachers push to restore Year 11 Ag as standalone subject to curriculum
Agriculture teachers are pushing to restore level one agriculture to the senior school curriculum, where levels two and three have returned.
Horticulture and Agricultural Teachers Association (HATA) president Rex Newman says the plan is to fold that content into a science curriculum that is already crowded.
“You’ve got specialist science teachers that won’t be comfortable teaching an agricultural program if there is one in there, and so more than likely it will be dismissed,” he says.
Newman says the gap means schools running a junior agriculture programme have no requirement to carry the subject on into the first year of senior study.
“The content that we need to get across at level one is mainly around the livestock, soils and plant science.”
