India’s 33% tariff on lamb will be wiped on 20 October, opening a market with 700 million consumers.

Nathan Guy, Independent chair of the Meat Industry Association, says he boards a plane to India today as the Special Agricultural Trade Envoy to promote lamb and meet Kiwi growers at a wool textile expo.

India is not a beef market because of religious reasons.

“This is a sheep play and a wool play, and significant opportunities in both,” he says.

Guy says building relationships and the cold chain means the market takes a while to open.
