Biological pesticides now make up 10 to 15% of pesticides used worldwide, but New Zealand’s regulatory system, built for chemicals, has slowed their uptake here. Lincoln Agritech chief executive Professor Travis Glare says work is underway to shorten that timeframe.
“If your regulation process takes too long, companies can’t afford to register because they’re not making any money until it’s registered,” he says.
He compares it to Brazil, which now runs at 50% biological pest control after cutting registration to one to two years.
