Better genetics is the low-hanging fruit in beef-on-dairy.

Simon Limmer, chair of the Dairy Beef Opportunities Group, says New Zealand produces 1.8 million dairy replacement calves that are pretty much a lost opportunity.

He says sexed semen is part of the solution.

“It’s never going to be the silver bullet that is going to provide a complete outcome.

“Ultimately, money will talk, and we’ve got to get the economics right.”

Limmer says the programme is a year in and needs momentum to show rearers the value.
