A proposed rural GP training pathway adds no extra time to the three-year programme.

Dr Luke Bradford, President of the Royal New Zealand College of General Practitioners, says trainees keep the first year, spend a year in rural general practice, then split six months in an emergency department with six months of electives such as paediatrics, psychiatry or obstetrics.

“Rural communities need people trained to work for them,” he says.
