Marlborough-based Repost has donated thousands of recycled fence posts to farmers hit by the recent floods in Kaikōura and Wairarapa, with an online fundraiser covering freight now past $10,000.

Co-founder Greg Coppell says many of the worst-hit stations still cannot reach their damaged country.

“The timing of this one’s quite crucial too, so it’s about a speed of recovery, and getting these businesses back operating as quickly as possible.”

Co-founder Dansy Coppell says they could not wait for the money to come in before sending posts north.

“We are not in the financial position to be able to cover the freight, so we’re just doing it at cost,” she says.

The donated posts travel on a truck they spray-painted with a call to honk your horn for the donors.

“It’s the most beautiful showmanship of our community, how people rally together.”

The freight fundraiser runs through Philippa Cameron’s What’s For Smoko online shop, where supporters can chip in from a dollar.

“They can picture that bundle being what they donated, so it’s something tangible.

Wairarapa’s steeper, slip-hit ground means fencing repairs there will not ramp up until October.

“The difference between Kaikōura is it was declared a national emergency, whereas Wairarapa wasn’t,” she says.
