NZ food safety and welfare rules earn a premium for beef in the US
Kate Acland, chair of Beef + Lamb New Zealand, says premiums for calves with good beef genetics are what will drive change.
She says sheep and beef farmers, dairy farmers, red meat processors and, to a lesser extent, milk processors are funding it.
She says New Zealand beef in the US is commodity beef and lean beef trim.
“There are a lot of rules which add cost in New Zealand, but we are actually extracting a premium because we produce a really good, safe product.”
