Dairy herds in the North Island have a three-week submission rate of about 82.2% this spring, up from 79.9% at the same time last year.
LIC chief executive David Chin says the result reflects good conditions for cows over the past three weeks.
“This is the first lead indicator of how profitable we’re going to be next year,” he says.
He says LIC data shows no statistically significant lift in submission or six-week in-calf rates in herds that use collars.
“The farmer still needs to be there and interpret the data and make sure that they’re running a good farm system.”
Chin says late-mating short-gestation semen has probably added about 2 million kg of milksolids this spring.
He says beef and sexed semen sales are each up about 25%.
