Maui Milk has lifted its supplier payout to $17.18 per kilogram of milk solids and is looking for new sheep milk suppliers across the North Island for the 2027-28 season. Chief executive Malcolm Edward says demand from China spans infant, healthy ageing and pet food streams.

“The demand’s really boosting at this stage,” he says.

Between 30,000 and 40,000 ewes are milked nationally, about 30% of the goat industry, and doubling supply would help reach critical mass. He says strong sheep regions such as Hawke’s Bay and Wairarapa are the target.

“The infrastructure’s already there, and they know how to farm sheep.”
