On farm mastitis testing technology from a Dunedin company has saved New Zealand dairy farmers an estimated $14 million in unnecessary treatment costs.

Andy Millar, chief veterinary operations officer at Mastaplex, says the Mastatest system lets farmers culture a milk sample on farm and get results within 24 hours, showing which infections need antibiotics and which drugs will work. The savings come from fewer unnecessary treatments, less milk discarded and reduced labour, he says.

“We’re now in over 25 countries with about 3000 farmers and 1000 vet clinics using the technology that we’ve got.”
