New Zealand has sent its first test container of fresh potatoes to Taiwan since regaining access to the market.

Potatoes New Zealand chief executive Kate Trufitt says the industry had access about 13 years ago but was unable to capitalise on it.

“In talking to the exporter earlier today, things are looking fairly positive,” she says.

Trufitt says Taiwan’s phytosanitary requirements centre on PCN, with growers testing ground before they plant.

“If you’re exporting and you’re meeting Taiwan’s requirements, quite often you’ll be meeting other requirements as well.”

She says small exports to Vietnam have started, and value-added products are the industry’s next step.

“We don’t send milk overseas, do we?”

Trufitt says planting is flat out around the country and growers are fairly happy with progress, despite spring snow in Canterbury.
