A pen of crossbred ewes has sold for a record $641 a head in New South Wales as farmers rebuild their sheep flocks.

Australian rural commentator Libby Price says the flock has fallen from a high of 180 million sheep in the 1970s to just 60 million.

“It’s very difficult once you get out of sheep to get back in,” she says.

She says wool is still up 25% on last year but falling, and farmers are also looking at cattle after good rain.

She says barley growers plan to store about 60% of the crop on farm in the hope global prices lift.

“It’s a tough time for grain growers.”
