Carrfields livestock agent Dylan Ford has won the New Zealand Young Auctioneers Competition at his fifth attempt.

Livestock agent and competition founder Mick Withers says eight auctioneers competed this year, but there are few openings for young people. “Not many of us want to leave until we really have to.”

He says competitors sit a theory interview with the judges on law, dispute resolution and auction requirements, worth 30% of the points, then sell lambs per head and cattle per kilo.

Withers says Dylan Ford stood out because he has always been prepared to listen to constructive advice.

He says a good auctioneer needs a strong personality and confidence, and must know the stock and the market. “A boring auctioneer makes a long day.”
