Relaxed government rules for agricultural spray drones risk environmental and safety harm without a training and licensing framework.

New Zealand Agricultural Aviation Association chair Kent Weir says the reforms allow drones up to 150kg. He says the missing piece is operator competency.

“It’s a bit like driving a truck down the road, there needs to be some form of training.”

He is calling for a weight break and licensing modelled on Australia’s system.
