The speed of AI adoption in agriculture is catching everyone by surprise, says Nuffield scholar James Allen.
“At a high level, everything’s moving much quicker than anyone expected,” he says.
His 2023 Nuffield report described technology slowly evolving into farmers’ lives, but the reality has run ahead of that.
“Big investment is great, but what does it mean? How do we use it? And show me the money in terms of whether it’s making a difference on the farm?”
Allen says farmers should start with housekeeping he calls the ABC of tech.
“The A is, what is your AI policy? Because you can run amok with this.”
B is backups for on-farm data, and C is connectivity and cybersecurity, with farms now big businesses exposed to breaches and ransom demands.
